I lived here in the late 60's early 70's when it was closed. My dad Peter Bishop ran the pub up the road. Paid a nostalgic trip back here in Sept '19 and what a shame that the old place had gone. Still, brought back a lot of memories of playing in the garden and catching newts in the pond that was there. We had so much fun exploring the magical building. Probably around 1964 for about three years I worked at Jennetts Restaurant at the Dorking crossroads, as a waiter, for Mr Lesley Hargreaves and his poodle, Trudy. In those days we did flambe cooking at the tables. The head waiter was John Rabbets from Hastings. Jim, the gardener from Epsom would also officiate as wine waiter, when he could drag himself away from the sporting life in the greenhouse. The ...see more
During the 1960's I lived next door to Jennetts Restaurant, in the Bricklayers Arms pub. Mr Hargreaves was the owner/manager and employed a number of very exotic Italian and Spanish waiters. "Jim" the gardener (the restaurant had very lovely and extensive grounds) was an inveterate gambler and in the days when televisions were scarce used to spend his afternoons watching our television when the racing was on.
