The Best Cakes In The World.

A Memory of Talacre.

I remember going to Talacre in the 1950s. Our treat every day was to go to the bakery. It was about 10 mins walk from the wooden cabin we stayed in. A bit like the hill billys. The smell when you got near to the bakery was amazing. We got custard tarts and bread, then we would go to the paper shop which was another short walk away. I remember a chippy which I think was near a big building like a pub or club house.
My brother and I were sent to fetch water from a tap which was on the side of dirt track road. We took a short cut over the sand dunes, but by the time we got back to our hill billy cabin, the buckets were half empty and full of sand. It was like an adventure. My brother used to go finding newts and rabbits and empty bullet cases from the war.
The sun was always shining and hot. No wireless, no flush toilet - just a hole in the ground with some home made toilet with a seat made of wood in a tiny shed. No electric, just oil lamps and gas bottles for cooking. Don't know what kids would do today. We loved it. We walked everywhere as we didnt have a car in those days.
