Growing Up In Temple Fortune
A Memory of Temple Fortune.
I grew up in Temple Fortune between 1959 and 1974. There was a school outfitters called Pullens in Temple Fortune, in Finchley Road near the junction with Temple Fortune Lane. We always bought our school uniforms there. There was a nice Italian restaurant called Il Capriccio opposite which did a good set lunch and before that a cafe called the Babette. There was a small department store on the corner of Bridge Lane called B.B. Evans and a good delicatessen called Panzers. In the 1960s there was an old fashioned Sainsbury's in Finchley Road near Henly's Corner. There seemed to be a vast range of cinemas nearby including the Odeon in Temple Fortune, the ABC in Golders Green Road, the Ionic near Golders Green station, North Finchley Gaumont, the Classic in Hendon Central, the Odeon at Hendon Quadrant and of course the original Hampstead Everyman which showed great foreign language films. South of Bridge Lane in Finchley Road there was once a shop which only sold antique china plates.
