More about this scene
Tetbury's Town Hall, or Market House, is one of the grandest of its kind found in the Cotswolds, and for centuries has been at the hub of the town's life and business. Built in 1655, it was enlarged in 1740 to accommodate Tetbury's fire engine and lock-up. On the stone roof, topping the decorative cupola, is a weather vane that features a pair of dolphins. Legend relates that the lord of the manor of Tetbury was sailing across the Irish Sea when his ship was holed and began to sink. After praying that he might be saved, two dolphins appeared and wedged themselves in the hole, thus saving the lord's life.
