More about this scene
This historic photograph of Thirlmere was taken from Hell How. It shows the last of the original two lakes—Leathe's Water and Wythburn Water—which formerly filled the valley below Helvellyn; they were later joined and became the Thirlmere Reservoir, when Manchester Corporation built the four-mile long reservoir between 1890 and 1892. Conifers, recently planted in the interest of water purity, now cloak the artificial lake with a dense canopy of branches.
