More about this scene
The first mention of St Bartholomew's church dates back to 1125, and that structure survived until 1820. It was replaced by a fairly plain church, which was largely demolished in 1885. This rather splendid edifice took its place, constructed of warm, honey-coloured stone beneath a rich red tile roof. The Ismay family used the church - they founded the White Star Line Shipping Company, of which the Titanic was the most famous yet ill-fated vessel.
