More about this scene

Caption for Tonyrefail, Coedely Colliery C1955: As the name of the colliery would indicate this pit is actually in the Ely Valley and at the time of the Frith photograph would be one of the few still in full production. Mind you it was started later as the two shafts here were not sunk until 1913. At its peak it employed 1,580 men and produced 515,000 tons of coal. There is a nicely composed divergence between the dark tree and wholly conical-shaped slag heap in the distance.

Memories of Tonyrefail, Coedely Colliery c1955

Daddy worked here for many years...also my nephew and uncles. I went underground when I was 14 years old with a group of four youngsters, taken down to view the mines with a gentleman who worked there and was a family friend too, his name was Jackie Belting, from Thomastown. We had an amazing few hours and I never forgot it.
