Childhood Memories
A Memory of Tottenham.
I moved to Tottenham when I was 5 yrs. We moved because of my dad’s work which at the time was Hope and Anchor Brewery, and then merged with Charrington’s Brewery, in Tottenham Brantwood Road, my dad delivered the beer to various pubs and clubs all around London. We actually lived in the High Road, No 776, which was next to a dairy depot, so didn’t have far to get our milk! We lived in a large Georgian house which used to be owned by Harrington’s, apparently back then beer was delivered by horse and cart, so our house had quite a bit of history attached to it. We moved there in January 1963, anyone remember all the snow that seemed to last forever? There was a canteen, bottling plant, warehouse, storage for forklifts, and a proper garage at the back of the yard, it seemed humongous! My Dad was caretaker, so not only did he deliver beer, but had to look after our house too. We lived in the house situated at the front of the yard, on the second floor, 3 large bedrooms, a bathroom, no toilet, stairs leading down to a large landing with a kitchen, 1/2 circle balcony, two large rooms which we used as a living room, and a toilet, another flight of stairs took us down to the front door, which was at the side. I went to Coleraine Park Primary School in Glendish Road. We lived there until I was 11 yrs and then moved to Bruce Grove as Charrington wanted to sell the building. So the nearest school was High Cross Secondary School for girls, I absolutely loved growing up in Tottenham, life was so much easier.
