The library and museum are on the right; the library opened in 1952. A khaki-clad ëTommyí, a bronze statue by S Nicholson-Babb RBS, is the townís war memorial. It was unveiled on 11 February 1923 by Col Viscount Hardinge; the first wreath was laid by the mother of Captain Eric Dougall, a local man awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously for bravery at Messines, Belgium in 1918. The Opera House complex behind the war memorial incorporates Barclays Bank.
