Fond Memories

A Memory of Tyldesley.

I was born in 1938 at Higham Square - to the left down Well St (demolished in the 40's) then moved to Astley Street where we played on the sand hills and Gin Pit yard pushing railway wheels. I went to the Upper George St School and can remember all the teachers names still. Often they used to run lots of cows from the railway yard past our school to the local abattoirs with a lady on a white horse in front. Mr Lathom was the head and ruled with a rod of iron. I enjoyed that school and have my reports still. It's a pity to see it now derelict. From there I went to the Senior Boys school till leaving in 1952/3. I still go back to Tyldesley to the dentist and walk round places to see the changes. What a shame it is being left to rot with all the closed shops.
