Upminster Bridge

A Memory of Upminster.

I lived in Norfolk Road, Upminster Bridge and knew Eddie at the greengrocers, I remember he used to wear a leather jacket in light tan and was a smashing chap. I was born in Norfolk Road in 1946

I lived with my parents in Glanville Drive, Hornchurch for the first part of my life. My first jobs after leaving university in 1969 were in Wood Green and Harringay and in both cases my daily commute started at Upminster Bridge station on the District Line. The station was also the starting point for day trips to Southend and Westcliff with my parents when I was younger. I didn't realise until recently that the floor tiles of the station foyer form a swastika symbol. The station opened in 1934 before the symbol became associated with the Nazis.
