I moved to Cranham, Lexington Gardens, a new estate when I was about three in 1961. I recall being in the cab of the lorry as we moved from my Grandparents house in Eyhurst Avenue, Elm Park. I went to school for the first term at Oglethorpe as Engayne infant school was too crowded. Hi all. I used to live in Beech Avenue from 1962-1979 and went to Branfil Infants/Junior School from 1965-1970. Really loved it there. I remember Mrs Tribe, Mrs Warren, Mr Ford (Tall Headmaster) Mr Hill (the slipper and ruler). Mrs Cassedy (she ran me over in the school playground in her Rover Coupe!) Mr Sumner (great man) Went on a school cruise in 1978 or 9 to Madeira/Vigo/ Lisbon. Threw up ...see more
I remember this cafe on the corner opposite The Bell pub and in front of what was, or became, the National Westminster Bank. They sold Glojoy lollies - the best flavour being spearmint which 'creaked' when you bit into them! I remember all the shops shown in the Frith Collection of Upminster and Cranham, where I was born in 1946. The Silver Horn ice cream shop, the Swan Library, Ports ...see more
So many memories of Upminster in growing up, thankfully my memory is still intact. Wonder how many people remember the following, Silver Horn sold the most delicious ice cream in Corbets Tey Road. Unigate dairy was at the back of the now Rooms furniture store, with the milk dispenser machine in Station Road selling cartons of milk chocolate drink :-) Room Stores with the toy depart on the top floor now ...see more
