More about this scene
During the 18th century Dr Samuel Johnson's father ran a bookstall here on market days. Samuel, who had a reputation for being full of his own self-importance, refused to stand with his father on the stall. In later years, Johnson did penance for his actions by standing bareheaded for several hours in the pouring rain on the spot where his father's stall had stood.
