Wainscott Kent

A Memory of Wainscott.

As children after my father was invalided out of the RAF he took a gardeners/maintenance job with a Mrs Hitchcock who lived in a large house in Hollywood Lane. She owned a thatched cottage nearby where we lived. It had a huge garden and long drive. That Winter it was so deep in snow that coal lorries could not get through and we were saved when the weight of the snow brought down a large tree so we could all have heating. I had a friend whose father owned a farm opposite our cottage and their surname was Dean.I attended the village school and sometimes a man delivering by pony and trap used to give us lifts down the lane. Would be marvellous if there were any old photographs of this road as I doubt the farm and houses I knew would still be there. Nita Jenkins

Tried to contact you direct by email but for some reason it didn't work.
I live in a cottage once owned by Mrs Hitchcock but as far as I know was never thatched, do you have any more information?
It was called Cherry Tree Cottage and close to Mrs Hitchcock`s house. My friend`s farm was the opposite side of the road to this. The cottage had quite a long drive up to it and it was definitely thatched. My mother used to say mice lived in it. There was also no damp proof course. I wonder if it was demolished. I am on nita_luce@yahoo.co.uk My friend`s name was Joyce Dean and she married and lived opp the school.
