More about this scene
Next to the gardener's house is the present-day rose garden, with delightful walkways and tropical houses. The last occupant of Thornes House was the Morley MP, Charles Milnes Gaskell. After this the house was used as a military hospital during the First World War, and was sold to the Council in 1919 for £18,500. It opened as a public park in August 1924, completing the 153 acres of breathing space we now enjoy. The house was used as a school from 1921, but it burned down on 15 July 1951. Wakefield College now stands on the site.
