No.1 Lycett Road.

A Memory of Wallasey.

My friends, the 'Bartups', lived at No.1 Lycett Road. John, the father was an accountant who worked for ICI. His wife Isabella (Bella) was a Scots lady from Kirkcudbright, I believe. Two children John and Jean. John went to the Wallasey Grammar School and I think that Jean went to the Girls High School. After Father John died, they moved to Leasowe Road. That would be about 1960.
I lived in Moreton, at 12 Stuart Avenue and went to Wallasey Technical Grammar School 1957-1962.
On leaving the Tech., I was in the Merchant Navy, trained as a Marine Engineer with Esso Petroleum Company Ltd, Marine Department and went to Leith Nautical College near Edinburgh.
With regards to the photograph of Wallasey Village, I remember it well and remember trying to catch the 'Bus home to Moreton. we would try first of all to get on the 'Bus at the bottom of St Hilary's Brae. If that didn't work we would walk on into the village by the roundabout to the Bus stop there. if that didn't work we would walk on, to the end of Mosslands Drive by the Railway Bridge. Sometimes, particularly in the Summer(when the sun always seemed to shine) we would walk along Leasowe road and end up walking all the way home. In 1961-2 I remember the new Wallasey Buses, which were Leyland 'Atlantean' front-entry double-deckers, with a rear-engine, cross-mounted!
Another memory from my schooldays; was that a steam engine was sent to New Brighton and as it passed the school, some sparks escaped from the funnel and set the bank of the railway-line on fire!! Ho Happy Days!!!
