Nostalgic memories of Wallington's local history

Share your own memories of Wallington and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My family lived in Reigate Way, Wallington, Surrey. My twin brother and I used to stand outside our house to listen for the aproaching buzz bombs. On this particular day, one glided in and fell on the playing field and allotment killing a Mr Hunter, our local DIY shop owner. It also nearly destoyed our house, a terriblble time, we were only 13 at the time. My father managed to get us in to the Anderson shelter ...see more
The love of my life took me home to meet his mum and dad. You might imagine the nervousness I felt wondering if they would approve of me. I already knew their son was the only one in the world for me. I was welcomed as a member of the family, and instantly added two more very precious loves to my life. Many very fond memories there followed in the years to come. Montagu Gardens in Wallington will forever remain extremely close to my heart!
Please if anyone has information about my family from Wallington I would be so appreciative. Gordon was a postal worker in the early 50's to 60's I know. We found the street address of Montagu Gardens on a used envelope in a box of memoribilla. They continued to live at this address for quite some time.
I lived in the Clock House estate, nominally Coulsdon but easily accessible by bike to Foxley Lane and the 234a bus (single decker to get under Wallington railway bridge) to the boys' grammar school. I was there from 1955 to 1962 and although I thought that it might, in fact it did me no harm. In particular I remember the shop over the road from the school where it had a soda fountain (Pinches store?), you ...see more
I went to Collingwood when Mrs Ingham was the head. The corporal punishment was at times severe. Another boy who was left handed was beaten and made to write with his right one. We played football in Beddington Park - where is Mellows?
We lived over the Express Dairy (opposite the Odeon) My early school days started in 1937 when Bandon Hill Infants were at Milton Road - we moved to Milton Road in 1935. The 654 Trolley bus route was nearby and sometimes the conductor would take out a long pole from under the bus to relocate the overhead poles to the cables above. When our class went up to the Sandy Lane school the Second ...see more
I may only be 30 and these pictures are before my time - but up until recently I lived in Wallington all my life and remember this beautiful church. Seems such a shame now that it is gone and there is a grotesque giant Sainsbury's in its place with an even worse eye-sore of a bus shelter which usually has mouthy chavs congregating by it!
I lived in Bute Gardens West, from Oct 1943 to when I married in 1965. My friends were Donald Scott, Rex Poge, Yashew, an immigrant boy who we nearly killed with a bow and arrow, and brother Dave. We had a club, The Silent Death, we called it the T>S>D>, and to join you had to do all sorts of stupid things like jump off Donalds garage roof, or kick a hat [with a brick underneath it!] funny, we ...see more
My mum found this site, and wow. I lived in Instone when I was 7 on the 9th floor with my mum, brother and sister, then we moved to Vulcan Close. We used to spend all our time over the field and on the decks, there used to be a van that sold sweets, papers, fags etc which my brother John worked on. Roundshaw was a fantastic place to live, I used to go to Roundshaw Junior School. We knew everyone on our deck which ...see more
I never actually lived in Wallington but had an aunt who lived there for many years. Her name was Mary and Joe Smith and had two kids called Paul and Denise. Joe was a scout leader. I spent many school holidays with the Smiths and loved every minute of it. Just reminiscing about going to Mellows Park and cant remember the name of the other park at the end of Demesne road. When I was old enough to travel on my own ...see more
