Wallington Green.

A Memory of Wallington.

I lived in nearby Harcourt Road. My late grandfather used to mow the grass and prepare it for the annual remembrance parade and open air service.
During the hot summers the green would be packed by drinkers from the "Dukes Head" which is in the photo on the right.
The green was the centrepiece for a parade of shops, both on Croydon Road and Manor Road. It brought together a small but friendly community, many of whom had served in the armed forces during World War 2.
Most of us either went to the 2 local Grammar schools or Elmwood, about 1.5 miles away in nearby Hackbidge.

I lived in Bampfylde Close from just after the war1945 for some 8 years eventually moving to Chelsfield in Kent.Looking at the photo of the Dukes Head brings back memories as a kid of 8/9 years old of Ken Powells butcher shop which is in that picture. He emigrated to Australia trying to persuade my Dad to go as well which didn't happen. The shop was taken over by Dewhursts. Some years later I lodged with friends in Curran Avenue and believe it or not my friends mum worked behind the bar at the Dukes Head her name was Lou Summerton lovely lady she was like a mum to me that was in the 70s.The good old days.
