Residents Of Church Lane Upper Walmer For 40 Years
A Memory of Walmer.
A row of terrace houses leads up to the old parish church of Walmer. The church where the Duke of Wellington worshipped whilst staying at Walmer Castle as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. Some of the dwellings in this terrace were the home of various members of the family of bricklayer John Baker, the brother of My Great Great Great Grandfather. What is now Malvern House, contained from 1841 John and his wife Nancy nee Maxted, his son bricklayer George & daughters Sarah & Sophia. Another daughter Susanna Baker was Next door living as a domestic help to Naval Pensioner Edward Brown, and next door to them lived John's sister Laundress Mary Marsh with her carpenter son Charles & her two unmarried daughters Sarah & Frances. The house adjoined to the other side of John Baker's belonged to his brother-in-law bricklayer John Minter who was the widower of Nancy's sister Sarah nee Maxted. Forty years on, the Baker family still had a connection to Malvern house, for John's unmarried daughter Sarah Bowles Baker ran a toy shop from the place in 1871 and then ran a sweet shop in 1881.
