The post office in this pretty black and white cottage opened in 1840, the year the Penny Black stamp first appeared. The position of sub-postmaster remained in the same family until it closed in 1987. The last incumbent, Thomas King, served for 41 years, a duty commemorated by a plaque on the garden wall.
