More about this scene
This chapter finishes across the next valley and up on the chalk ridge at Warlingham, 600 feet above sea level. At the centre of this village, which is attached by suburbia to Purley and Croydon, is a triangular green with a war memorial. The Green is out of view to the right; the buildings we see here are on its north side - the houses are dated 1898. Beyond the contemporary Warlingham Church Hall are 1920s shops and a bank, which is dated 1927.
