The house was built in 1751 by Samuel Greathead on the site of an Elizabethan mansion. In the 1920s domestic staff at Guy's Cliffe worked a six-and-a-half-day week. They were expected to attend church every Sunday, even if it was their half day off.

From approximately 1939-1945 the house was taken over by the Waifs and Strays Society becoming a home for 40 boys. They had moved from Chislehurst, Kent. The house was also used as a landmark by German bombers during their attacks on Coventry.
