Spring Cherry Blossom In Welling
A Memory of Welling.
In a front garden opposite the back entrance of Brampton Primary School in Alexander Road, stood a huge cherry tree. During the month of April it magically transformed into a spring version of winter wonderland. a glorious cloud of pure white blossom. As a child in the late 1950's I was enchanted by this tree and it opened my eyes to other cherries growing in the area, most notably the grand avenue of deep pink Kazan cherries lining the bottom half of Gipsy Road, always a stunning sight during spring. Cherry trees had been widely planted in my neighbourhood, so that if you stood on Normanhurst Road facing the end of Brixham and Gipsy roads, you were treated to a sea of white blossom stretching up between the gardens. At home my father had planted four flowering fruit trees - apple, cherry plum and pear - but best of all was our cherry tree, and later in summer, the best of all fruit.
