Welling In The 50s

A Memory of Welling.

Have just found this site and interested to read your memories. I lived in Sundridge Avenue and went to Eastcote C.P.School then Westwood leaving there in 1959. I have seen one name I recognise Derek Faiers who I was at school with. I'm now living in the far west of Cornwall but fondly remember happy times growing up in Welling. As a kid I spent a lot of time playing with friends in Oxleas Wood. We used to be out for hours but it was so safe then we all knew who the weirdos were so steered clear of them. In later life I went to the youth club at St.Mary's on Shoulder of Mutton Green. Afterwards we would go either to the Green Man or the We Anchor in Hope. Saturday morning pictures at the Granada then as we grew older we would go regularly to the main films 1/3d or 1/9d if you felt flush; Saturday nights Robinson Cleaver would rise up from the pit playing the Wurlitzer. Ay-Gee Motorcycles is still on the corner of Bellegrove Road and Welling Way but not many other shops of our youth. I think the bakers on the corner of Westwood Lane and Bellegrove Road was called Brett's. There was Contobs, Grimsleys (corner of Central Avenue) and the herbalist shop further down who had adverts in the side window for products I didn't understand when I was younger! Danson Park with its lake, miniature railway, the big motor launch and where I used to play football for the youth club. People I was friends with went to various schools such as Cray Valley Tech, Erith Tech, Bexley tech., Maryville Convent, Bexley Grammar, etc. so if anybody remembers me I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Eastcote school. I didn't go there but my friend Richard did. It sounded much better than my primary, Belmont. He knew so many things I didn't from his time at Eastcote. He told me about his teacher Mrs Steggles and his friend Sean, who had a pet Alsatian.and Julian with a pet monkey. Shame there aren't schools like that now!
Yes Eastcote School was a great place to start one's education. I remember my very first teacher when I must have been 4 rising 5 and her name was Miss Traves. For some strange reason we were made to lie on Rush mats under our desks for a time in the afternoon. I also remember Mrs,Steggles and our headmistress was Miss Kennedy from whom I had the cane (my first experience of corporal punishment). Our school field backed on to Oxleas Wood where we used to have hours of fun after school and at weekends. In my year was Barry Ockleford, Peter Galbraith, Susan Hack, Pam Secular, Linda Michael, Michael Butler plus numerous others who don't come immediately to mind. If any of these people or those I haven't named remember me, I'd be delighted to hear from them.
.
Just a line to say thank you to David Hughes for the interesting comments. Sadly, I don't remember your name from that time but then there were so many individuals along the road from infants to senior school, plus the rapid onset of old age, that it would be almost impossible to recall everyone. One person who was at Westwood at the same time as me (1955 to 1959) I have since discovered if Len Goodman of Strictly Come Dancing fame. Sadly I don't remember his name or whether he was in my form. It transpires that he eventually bought the former headmaster (Mr.Daniell or 'The Dean)'s house. Before I left Eastcote I recall Miss Kennedy was succeeded by Mr.Taverner. Would be delighted to receive any more interesting comments.
