Outside Our House

A Memory of Wells-Next-The-Sea.

This brings back vivid memories of growing up as the doctor's son. Our house not quite in this shot was on the left just here. The wing of the car could have been my father's an Austin Devon. As a five year old I would cycle like mad all round The Buttlands on my trike and when I had a two wheeler, across the diagonal paths and skid to a halt on the corners. Like many of my friends my growing up years revolved around the quayside area and its activities as a harbour, especially when Grays fair would set up the during regatta week and of course the smell of fish and chips from French's, and in later years from Plattens too. About ten years ago I had lunch there just after they had won a national award. The house is still there with an unchanged frontage and a colour photo taken two years ago brings memories flooding back.

I was a patient of your Dad. We lived in Gambles Square, behind the bakery off Staithe Street. Remember sitting in that little room at the front of your house waiting to see Dad. Happy days!
High there Colin I well remember your Dad working at Coopers the bakery and calling out to him as we walked ,ran, or cycled passed a window and calling out!"Baker Daddy" yes they were happy days. I have not been back to Wells for at least five years. do you live somewhere near there?
