Wells, The Market Place 1964

More about this scene
The scooters behind the fountain are a symbol of the 50s and 60s. In the background (centre) is the Market House, erected in 1836, which was converted to the post office in 1923 by building between and behind its open colonnade. The hotels are now bedecked with flowers. The area which was once the site of the Exchequer has now become a small car park which has to be cleared twice a week to allow the market to take place. At the end of the 20th century, the Market Place was the subject of an enhancement scheme - the asphalt surface was removed and replaced by cobbles.
