Welshpool, The Mermaid Inn c.1955

More about this scene
Originally known just as Pool, 'Welsh'; was added to differentiate it from the English Poole in Dorset. Welshpool has had an anxious history, situated on the border with England, and has been destroyed on several occasions. As if to emphasise this, a small timber-framed inn stands neatly between later, or modified, buildings in this ancient market town three miles from the English border in Montgomeryshire. The building, formerly the Black Boy, dates from the 16th century but the front elevation is part of the restoration work of 1890 by Frank Shaylor.
