More about this scene
Panshanger was built in 1806 by Peter, fifth Earl Cowper on high ground close to the valley of the River Mimram. In 1855 the mansion narrowly escaped destruction by a fire which caused £12,000 damage. The unique art collection that included works by Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Poussin and Rubens was saved. Eventually, Panshanger passed to Lord Desborough, and when Lady Desborough died in 1955, the mansion was demolished. Only the stables now remain.
