Nostalgic memories of Wembley's local history

Share your own memories of Wembley and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Fantastic memories of the Monday Club started & by the famous impresario Micky Most where we would dance whilst top bands of the day where on stage, literally only a few feet away. I remember watching Eric Burden & the Animals doing full rendition of “House of the Rising Sun” - incredible!
I remember this being built in front of the Wembley Pool in early 1960’s bringing Ten Pin Bowling to London. We used to meet up on Friday’s evenings after watching Ready Steady Go (which was transmitted from the ATV Studios close by in Wembley) and the forerunner to Top of the Pops. There was a cocktail bar (very posh, we thought) above & overlooking the bowling through glass screens.
So many memories of Ice Shows, Circus, athletics meetings & ice hockey in the 1950’s & 60’s
Its a shame its usually empty now but my mum and i have been going Wimpys ever since I was around 5 or so. Lovely little place, hope it stays for even longer
My name is Jim O'Hanlon. I am 66 years old. I have just discovered this site and have seen a couple of places written about which provoke many nice memories from my childhood and early teens. I remember Wembley well. It was a bustling town then (1960s). Two cinemas, the Odeon near Copeland School. I used to go and see the double feature on Saturday morning. The comedian,Norman Wisdom ...see more
Having only this week come across your website, with so many writing about their memories of Wembley, I felt inspired to add my memories too. I was born in Pettsgrove Avenue in 1941 and lived there until 1965 when I married a lovely man from the Western Isles. My name then was Sheila Razzall. I attended Sudbury Primary School, taking the short cut through Vale Farm, past the outdoor swimming pool on to ...see more
I wrote this piece for a writing group exercise in April/May 2019, near my home in NE Scotland. LIttle did I know then that some of the memories would form part of my Mum's Eulogy just three months later. The day after her funeral, I took my husband, eldest son and his wife for a walk from Sudbury Town to Wembey High Street, Ealing Road, One Tree Hill and Horsenden. There may be a few ...see more
I was born in 1950 in Brampton Grove on Barn Hill and spent a lot of time playing in Barn Hill park especially around the pond. We used to toboggan down the hill in the snow and I remember breaking my front tooth on the rail of the toboggan. I have had a crown ever since! I was a real tom boy and loved climbing trees there.
I grew up in Regal way just off Preston Hill but was born in Shirehall Rd in 1938. My memories of living in Regal way were rather sketchy and am trying to jog my memory of my life there from 1938 until 1953. We attended the Catholic church called St Erconwalds and attended there as a family. We always sat at the front on the left side as I do to this day when I attend my church here where I live now . My brother and I were altar boys as were another set of brothers.
I was born in 16 Dagmar Avenue. Then moved to 95 Oakington Manor Drive when I was 4. Our house at OMD backed onto the stadium and I remember I was in the garden when England scored the winning goal of the World Cup in 1966. I was terrified by the roar and ran in crying. We used to play in Sherins Farm. Never any fear in those days (1964-1973) we played ...see more
