More about this scene

This was such a tranquil place in 1906; but now it lies on the main Dales road from Hawes to Leyburn. The village was at the private entrance to Bolton Castle, and would have provided this massive stronghold with goods and trades. The castle dominates the northern side of the Dale; it was here that Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1568 and 1569 before her eventual execution in 1587.
