My mum grew up in a house called Fernlea in West Ashling. She was the youngest of 8 children by Ron and Frances Marsh. Frances was also known as Cissy and was a Kennett - who had been in West Ashling when she was a child. She and her two brothers, Albert and Willie, went to the village school. In my large family are Larbies. At the present, I do not know how, but recall in 1920/30s visiting relatives that ran a watercress farm, which I thought was in Nutbourne. I can remember the house had a small pond in the front and I used to try and catch sand hoppers. The watercress beds were in channels with planks to cross by. I have no memories of West Ashling but somewhen before 1860 my G/G/Grandfather James Hare started the watercress beds there. It was not untill quite recently we found out what we know about this family. My G/Grandfather George was not infact registered as a Hare he had his mothers name which was Mayhew. All his children from his first marriage were all registered as Mayhew's and were all born in the East End ...see more
