Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Friday 19th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. Orders placed after midday on Friday 19th December will be delivered in the New Year.

Hawkes Lane Hill Top

A Memory of West Bromwich.

Circa date: 'The British Oak' Public House. My Uncle Neville and Aunty Joan kept this Pub for some time when I was a young child. Uncle Neville died whilst licensee and Aunty took over. It was a family pub, always seemed to be full. This is where my erngagement party was held in 1968. (Many years later, with 2nd husband George, Aunty Joan (with one other pub in between ) moved to The Samson & Lion further down the road - last time I saw that it was a fish and chip shop.

Hi Yvonne, I drank in there when I was 17 year old. I lived in St Vincent crescent, just down the rd. My dad was Ronnie grigg, local singer and compare and chairman at the Ponda (HT Social club)
The Legion was on the fork at the bottom, and Syd cooper and lisa where always in there until the new one was built. I used to play in Queen st, over the rd from the pub. when I was a kid, its all gone now of course.

I hope my memory isn't playing tricks but I'm sure Hawkes lane wasn't as wide as this. This looks like the main road through Hill Top. My dad and all of his many brothers and sisters were born at 30 Queen st. And I lived at this house for two years in the early sixties. All the houses, pubs etc were demolished shortly after. My gran was never happy leaving the house she was born in, and died shortly after moving in to new flat in Hill Top.

@ Alan Porter: you’re correct, it is Hill Top High Street. You can see St.James Church, further down the street, on the right. The turn for Hawkes Lane is out of picture, further back, and to the left.
