More about this scene

It looks for all the world as if someone has chopped the spire off a church and deposited it in the middle of the village. This is, however, the village cross, which was erected in 1820. The Black Bull dates from the early 18th century; it was a pub until 1924, and is now a house. The Methodist chapel, behind, dates from 1898, and the village hall was originally the Congregational chapel, built in 1874.

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from West Burton

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My great great great grandmother Margaret Wellock was born in this village in 1811. She married Mathew Edward Bywell from Middleham and lived most of her life in West Witton. She later lived in Aysgarth were she died and is buried in the churchyard there. I wonder if there are any Wellocks still living in the village.
