Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Friday 19th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. Orders placed after midday on Friday 19th December will be delivered in the New Year.

More about this scene

18th-century cottages in Main Street at West Lulworth, looking westwards from the wide triangle of highway and grass beside the Castle Inn. The Dorey family were everywhere at this end of the village. As well as Mrs Ann Winzar Dorey at the Castle Inn, Mrs Mary Dorey was the shopkeeper, and Joseph Dorey became the local builder. Fred Stockley, the baker, lived across the road from the Castle.

Two Unusual Events.
The first unusual event that I remember was when the tide went out so far that it was possible to walk all the way across the cove; it was also possible to walk out to the two points of the cove. Secondly was when three steamers were anchored at Lulworth at the same time, one was the Empress and another the Victoria but I do not remember the name of the third.

Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve was a magical time at Lulworth. As a member of the choir I remember how we went around the village singing carols. There was no electricity in most of the village at the time and most cottages used lamps and candles. The church was lit by candles and was a lovely sight in the evenings.

Coal Shortage
During the war we lived at 4 Sunnyside Terrace. At one point during 1942 Mr Chaffey, the coalman, could not deliver coal because his horse and cart could not get up the hill because of ice and snow. We were rapidly running out of coal. I suggested to my mother that I go up the hill in the middle of the night and cut one of the trees down that were growing in the copse. I did this and sawed the tree in sections ...see more

The Castle Inn
My aunt Dorothy Whitlock was a collector of seashells and black sand. When you enter the Castle Inn you may notice on your left hand side the mural created by her of shells and black sand. I myself now collect shells mainly from Sanibel Island in Florida and use them with a combination of calligraphy to create pictures.

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
