More about this scene
The branch railway from Weymouth to Portland (left) was built westwards from Weymouth railway yard (centre right) in 1862 and opened in 1865. This original timber viaduct was replaced in cast iron at the turn of the century. North of Westham Road bridge, at the northern end of the Backwater, it carried its last passengers in a special service on 29 April 1959 when Queen Elizabeth II crossed in the royal train. Dismantling of the line and its viaducts took place in 1971, and the dock railway (right) to Weymouth Harbour closed later. The Swannery (centre) is being fed by its swanherd; this was a popular visitor attraction. The new Swannery Bridge carries the relief road between Kings Roundabout and Westham Roundabout.
