More about this scene
Wherwell is one of Hampshire's prettiest villages. By the time this photograph was taken, the local railway had been in use for 16 years. For some reason the line became known as 'The Nile;' it was particularly appreciated by Queen Victoria, who requested that royal trains use this route when she travelled to Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Later, the track was used in the film version of The Ghost Train.
