Surviving accounts books for 1458-61, 1467-68, 1476-77, 1500 and 1509 show that the Whickham mines were contributing considerable revenues to the bishop. At the Reformation the Church's mines were confiscated by the Crown, who then offered them on 99-year leases to Newcastle merchants.
