More about this scene

Caption for Whitby, 'Gemini' 1891: The only thing twin-like about these children is the very bad-tempered scowl on their faces. They certainly are not saying 'cheese'. Perhaps they didn't like the photographer - or it might be the fact that they are sitting on a rock covered in wet seaweed. They have recently been identified as twin boys, Matthew and Robert Peart.

An extract from Yorkshire Coastal Memories.

Memories of Whitby, 'Gemini' 1891

The children are twin boys. Matthew Peart on the left and Robert Peart on the right. Robert was drowned at the age of twenty when he was swept overboard near St Petersburg on 19 July 1908.
