More about this scene
When the visitors finished climbing the 199 church steps, they encountered the Caedmon Cross at the top. It is a replica of the ancient Ruthwell Cross, and was placed here in 1892 by the efforts of Canon Rawnsley, one of the founders of the National Trust. The parish church is Norman in origin, but has been much altered and enlarged over the centuries; its interior is remarkably idiosyncratic and attractive.
