Whitchurch Town Hall Saturday Night Dances

A Memory of Whitchurch.

I remember attending the dances in the Old Town Hall. The promoters use to bus people in from all the local towns - Wem, Ellesmere, Malpas, Nantwich and Wrexham. I lived in Whitchurch and had an older friend who worked on the local paper, The Whitchurch Herald, and when the Beatles played[1963/64?] one of them stayed at his house on Wrexham Road.
There were no disco so you went to dance and meet the opposite sex.
Monday mornings in school all the girls would be discussing Saturday night and usually the boys they had met from Wem Grammar School. They didn't have a High School in Wem so all the girls attended Whitchurch High School which amalgamated with the Whitchurch Grammar School in 1963.

Comments & Feedback

Hello - thank you for this memory. I was too young to attend the Beatles show at the Town Hall Ballroom. But, I am originally from Wem and had a rock band who played in the Whitchurch Civic Centre (the same site as the Town Hall) a couple of times in 1981. So, I'm researching the Beatles gig in Whitchurch. I'm trying to contact Mike Dale who was the events organiser at that time. Would he have been your friend? Though I think he lived on Smallbrook road, not Wrexham Road.
Thanks for any pointers and help on this.
Roger
