75 Years Later

A Memory of Whiteleaf.

I was born in 1948 in the house then called 'Melita' a thatched house divided into three, it is the house at the very top of the holloway up on the bank, Mr. and Mrs. Lucas lived one side, Mr. and Mrs. Bezant the other, my parents were Ben and Betty Legg. I am Brian, my brother Sid passed away in Australia a year ago aged 76. As kids we caddied at the golf course for 2/6d for 9 holes (12 and a half pence in todays money). We worked at all the local farms during haymaking and harvest, we cleared snow in winter, sang carols badly on doorsteps at Christmas and made a Guy every October getting a penny here and a penny there for November 5th. I worked on the local milk round with my Mum, rain and shine, starting at 0400 and regularly dodged in and out of local orchards in the season. I'll stop now, talk to me if you want to hear more.
