A Memory of Whitley Bay.
Hello, I am the Great Granddaughter of Robert and Mary Metcalfe who were publicans in the late 1800's in Whitley Bay. Local census forms report that they became grocers at a later date while living in Whitley Bay. Their only child, Dorothy Murray Metcalfe (my Grandmother) married a New Zealand Naval Officer in 1918 in Whitley Bay and moved to New Zealand. Her parents either came out to NZ at the same time or followed at a later date.
My Grandmother always spoke so very fondly of the place she grew up in - you could almost see her looking back as though she was still there, in her later years. Dee, as she was known, lived to the grand age of 99 years.
I am hoping someone may have archival notes in reference to the street they lived in or the pub / grocers shop they operated - a long shot I realise but felt I must follow this up. The family here in NZ know very little about our heritage in the UK and beyond. So, if anyone has something that might be a connection and willing to share, I would appreciate hearing from you. I can be contacted on retsilmj@clear.net.nz - Many thanks
