Happiness In The Village

A Memory of Whitnash.

I first came into Whitnash in 1962 I had a pal who lived in South Terrace with his Nan his name was David Lloyd Smith, in those days Whitnash was still a small village, we both had motorbikes just old two strokes that were always breaking down, we used to meet at the Plough Pub on the bend and sit round the back in a covered area we also met by the church in the old wooden building which was a youth club on a Friday there we met a local girl which we both fancied her name was Norma and she lived with her sister and mum in Staunton Rd, I was the lucky one and courted Norma around Whitnash and married her at St Margarets Church in Sept 1965. The village was beginning to grow with several new estates, I remember in those days there was a caravan site down one of the side roads passed the Plough on the left side, we made friends with a couple that lived there. We brought our first house in Avon road it was an old place and wanted a lot of work done opposite was a lady and she lived in one of the old prefabs and just down from us lived a young Bernard Kirton and his family.
We had a son Marc who went to the local village jnr school and also belonged to the local cub pack, When in the early 70,s they started building the Golf lane Estate we decided to buy a new house on the phase 2 complex in a close later called Kirton Close and it was the entrance to the junior school. we often use to walk the dogs down Golf lane it was still a country lane, we also used to walk the lanes back of the church and the fields, I remember St Margarets Church at Christmas and the carols. In 1977 we moved away my Son now lives Southam and I live in village similar to Whitnash called Hullbridge in Essex but have fond memories of Old Whitnash 40 yrs ago.
