The central area, with car park and bus shelter, was redesigned in 2002. On the left is the Georgian-fronted White Hart Hotel. The former Crown Inn is at the end of the row (centre), beneath the octagonal church tower with its wooden leaded spire. To the right, the building with a hipped roof is now three shops.

I remember happy times at the Vine public house . It was renamed Crampy’s , due to Cecil Bowles ( the landlord ), being nicknamed Crampy. His little wife Marge used to work behind the bar also . We loved Marge . When Crampy was out of the way , she used to climb on a little stool and help herself to something alcohol of the shelf . She would put her finger to her mouth and say , Shush, don’t tell Father. I often wondered what she drank , and for whatever reason, he didn’t like her having it .
My wife and newborn son and I lived at Glevering Hall from 1977-1979. I was with the USAF at RAF Bentwaters. We lived in a nice cold home next to Bob and Anne and their children David and Tracy. There was a roundhouse across the drive from us known as Shooters Lodge. My boss from the base lived there, we actually told them about it and they loved it. I was with the USAF and had just spent a year in Morocco. We were assigned to RAF Bentwaters but worked at RAF Woodbridge with the 79th. Coming into the country we first stayed at the White Hart Inn in Wickham Market and learned that we spoke American, the English speak English, similar for sure but different. During the 1960s while stationed at RAF Bentwaters I, with my family, lived at #6 Broad Road, in Wickham Market. Our landlord was Richard Upson, who with his family lived on one side of the house and we occupied the other side. Our neighbour was Police Sergeant Alan Airey who has since passed away. My time spent in England was without doubt the happiest time of my life. If we could only turn back time!!
