Nostalgic memories of Widnes's local history

Share your own memories of Widnes and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Yes, I went to Simms Cross Primary school too! Born in Frederick St, just over the road from school, in 1941, our headmistress was the very formidable Miss Coates and there was the terrifying Miss Telford (everyone was scared of her!) I was a very tiny, timid little girl with a miniscule appetite, and would cry most days when I couldn't finish the awful school dinner. There was no choice, we had to clear ...see more
Does anyone have any memories of my Primary School in Ditton, Widnes. I can't remember the schools name unfortunately, but it was located on Hale Road/Liverpool Road. I remember the head teacher was a Mrs Kenwright.
I was born in 1933 and went to Simms Cross School. When the blitz of liverpool took place, firengines came from all over the North West and after the first night they were replaced by a fresh group of machines and those who had worked all night were moved to Simms Cross School to catch up on some sleep. I arrived at school for what I thought would be a normal schol day to be greeted with a boys idea of ...see more
My family moved to Widnes in 1961, when I was 11 and we lived at 3 Nicholas Road, across from the Blundell Arms. I attended Bankfield School until we moved to Australia in 1964. I enjoyed my time at the school and remember each Friday paying sixpence for the school to build a swimming pool. The school was well run with Mr Kettle as headmaster. I visited Widnes in 2005 to show my wife where I grew up. The school ...see more
I too attended The Open Air School and loved my time there with Miss Daniels the head teacher
I remember the old quarry, where Quarry Court is now. It used to have straw or something similar in it, and me and my brother Alan used to jump off the top, into the quarry.
Can anyone remember if the funeral parlour was sited were the coop used to have its repair shop in Lugsdale Road? I can remember the repair shop, I did work at the CAB in the 80s, which used that site before it moved further along the building, above was the old theatre/cinema which I have seen.
I was born in Moss Bank in 1945 and had 3 brothers and one sister; my maiden name was O Connor. We lived at 12 Brown St and I have many happy memories of my first 11 years there. I went on to Notre Dame School in St Helens. I married Jim Edge from Alexander Drive in ditto and he used to work at the old Widnes baths. We now live in Australia but we still try to visit Widnes as often as we can.
I lived in Beach Terrace until 1948 then moved to Christie Street. I went to St Bedes school and the Fisher More until 1955. I went to work at the Co-op in Albert Road,it was a great job and I made lots of friends. I love living in Widnes and wouldn't live anywhere else. I remember getting knocked down by a motor bike coming off the transporter bridge and been taked to the Accident Hospital in St Mary's Road.
I was born in Elliott Street, moved to 10 South Street - my brother was born there in November 1943 - I was eight years old and an only child - I was so excited I ran around to Howards Chip Shop in the main street and got knocked down by a double decker bus - only grazed - that little brother is now 68 years old.
