Notice the ornate sign outside Neil and Barker's shop. The three balls, the sign of a pawnbroker, are said to originate from St Nicholas, the patron saint of pawnbrokers. They represent the bags of gold that he once gave to three girls to save them from destitution. St Nicholas, of course, is usually better known these days as Santa Claus.

I was a pupil at West Bank Primary School in Widnes. I was in the infants in 1954. I loved this school. I can't remember the name of the HeadMistress at the time but John Wilcox took over when I moved up to the juniors. My maiden name is Maegan Edwards. My dad ran the Angel pub. My grandfather Timothy Mitchell - born Galway, Ireland 1866 In 1881 he lived on Back Lane, Cuerdley, with his brothers Thomas and John. The were all Farm Labourers. I was born at the maternity home high field road 1939 Lived in Elliott Street As children we used to go up to Pex Hill anyone remember that I used to ride across the river with my Dad on the transporter and was scared it would drop in, but Dad said don't worry there is cork underneath it will float Memories JoanDownes(nee Carr)
