More about this scene
The Minster's Chained Library dates back to 1686. It is one of the biggest in the country with over 200 volumes, the oldest dating back to 1343. The volume of Raleigh's 'History of the World' has a hole burnt through 104 pages, supposedly caused by the poet Matthew Prior who fell asleep with an unguarded candle nearby.
