I Don't Remember Much

A Memory of Wingate.

My father was manager of the colliery in Wingate until late 1952. I went to Wingate Primary School in 1951. Other notable pupils, not in my year, were the novelist Barry Unsworth and Geoff Caygill who I met in Hull where he was teaching science.

I too went to Wingate Primary about the same time 51/52.I remember waving through the classroom window to my Dad who was the school caretaker. He played football for Wingate Wanderers for years, even though he only had one arm(lost in WW2).I have a treasured photo of him scoring a wonderful header in the snow.We lived opposite the Fir Tree pub, before moving to Station Town.
