More about this scene
In 1690 Ambrose Crowley relocated his ironworks and workers from Sunderland to Winlanton and Swalwell. The works at Winlanton forged light tools, while that at Swalwell went in for heavier items, including cannon, anchors and chains. Crowley was ahead of his time; he built cottages for his workers and the community had the serv- ices of a doctor, schoolmaster and a parson. Crowley even established an arbitration court at which workers had representatives. The court settled all matters relating to pay and working conditions.
