Within the park is the memorial column dedicated to Richard Young (1809-71), a local shipping magnate, Member of Parliament, five times Mayor of Wisbech and Sheriff of London and Middlesex. Designed by J Wallis Chapman, of London, it was inaugurated on 31 October 1872, and cost around £300.On 11 December 1883, the memorial column was blown over during a gale but was quickly rebuilt, with some modifications. The drinking fountain and enclosed garden have since been removed.
